Commissioner Blumert's Motion Removes NE 10th as Possible Location for New Jail, SE 59th Post also No Longer Being Considered

For Immediate Release --- December 13th, 2023

For More Information Contact: Commissioner Carrie Blumert at (405) 713-1501

Oklahoma County - Today, Commissioner Carrie Blumert made good on her promise to remove the NE 10th St and I-35 location from consideration for the location of the new county jail in Northeast Oklahoma City. In addition to the Northeast Oklahoma City location, Blumert’s motion included removing a site at SE 59th St and Post Rd from consideration. The motion prevailed by a vote of 3-0.

While awaiting word on their offer to purchase land from the City of Oklahoma City and the Airport Trust as the site of the new jail, the Board of County Commissioners continues to receive and evaluate additional sites for the location of the new jail.

Throughout the process of reviewing potential sites, District One Commissioner Carrie Blumert has made clear that she is opposed to locating the jail in Northeast Oklahoma City. In a press release last week, Blumert served notice that she would make a motion to remove the NE 10th St and I-35 location from consideration as the site of the new county jail.

“Since August, I have made clear that I am opposed to locating the jail in Northeast Oklahoma City and have been consistent in that stance ever since,” said Blumert. She continued, “I hope today’s vote puts this matter to rest once and for all and allows my constituents in Northeast Oklahoma City and Midwest City to breathe a little bit easier.”
