FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
May 9, 2025
OKLAHOMA CITY – Oklahoma County District Attorney Vicki Zemp Behenna announced the conviction of Canaan Jenkins, 19, by an Oklahoma County jury. Jenkins was charged with Assault and Battery with a Deadly Weapon as a result of a shooting at the State Fair on September 23, 2023.
Oklahoma City Police were called to the Bennett Event Center at the Oklahoma State Fair after reports of a shooting. Responding officers located Jaelen Frazier on the north side of the event center with a gunshot wound. He was transported to the hospital where he was treated for three weeks before being released.
Officers were given a description of the shooter and which way he fled after the shooting. Jenkins was located and transported to OCPD headquarters for an interview. At first, he denied being the shooter but eventually admitted he was the suspect. Jenkins said he fired his weapon in self-defense after a fight broke out.
The range of punishment for a conviction of Assault and Battery with a Deadly weapon is zero years to life. Yesterday, the jury recommended a sentence of eight years in the Oklahoma Department of Corrections. Formal sentencing by the Court is set for June 30, 2025.
Jenkins entered a blind plea of guilty for a Conjoint Robbery that happened on September 22, 2023 (CF-2024-1501). The range of punishment is a minimum of 5 years and a maximum of 50 years in the Oklahoma Department of Corrections. The Court will sentence Jenkins on June 30, 2025.
DA Behenna would like to thank the jury for their time and thoughtful consideration during the trial, as well as the police who thoroughly investigated this case and the prosecutors and staff who prepared the case for trial.
