DA to Seek the Death Penalty in Murder of 85-Year-Old Oklahoma City Woman

23 Jun, 2026 | Return|

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

June 23, 2026

OKLAHOMA CITY – The Oklahoma County District Attorney’s Office announced today that it is seeking the death penalty against Cordell Wilson, 33, for the violent rape and murder of Ina Balch.

The state filed the Bill of Particulars Monday morning citing the following aggravating circumstances:

  • The murder was especially heinous, atrocious, or cruel
  • The existence of a probability that the defendant would commit criminal acts of violence that would constitute a continuing threat to society "The decision to seek the death penalty is among the most serious responsibilities entrusted to a prosecutor,” said District Attorney Vicki Zemp Behenna.

“It is not a decision that is made lightly, hastily, or without careful consideration. After a thorough review of the facts, the law, and the aggravating circumstances alleged in this case, our office has determined that seeking the death penalty is appropriate. While no court proceeding can restore what was taken from Ina and her family, we have an obligation to pursue justice in a manner that reflects the seriousness of the crime alleged and is consistent with Oklahoma law.” Balch was found by a family member bound and sitting up in her bed. She was deceased.

Detectives were called to her home in the 1800 block of N.W. 9th to investigate. The medical examiner determined Balch’s cause of death was from a broken hip and the internal bleeding that occurred as a result.

Wilson remains in custody on a $10 million bond. His next court date is September 23, 2026.

Criminal charges are based on probable cause to believe a person has committed a crime. All defendants are presumed innocent unless proven guilty in a court of law.
